Step 1: Understanding Your Freight Weight & Dimensions
Every accurate auto transport quote starts with two variables carriers price against before anything else: deck footprint and gross vehicle weight. A standard 9-car open hauler distributes ~80,000 lbs across five axles, meaning a single oversized SUV or dually pickup can bump a shipper from a 1/9th slot into a 1/6th slot — a 30% cost swing before fuel surcharge.
The same physics governs LTL. Freight class codes (NMFC 50 through 500) are derived from density, stowability, handling, and liability. A pallet at 15 lb/ft³ prices at Class 70; drop density to 6 lb/ft³ and you jump to Class 125 — often a 40–60% rate change on identical lane miles.
For auto transport specifically, the open vs. enclosed carrier decision reprices the load by 40–80%. Open transport dominates ~97% of national volume because it maximizes deck efficiency; enclosed carriers sacrifice slots for weather sealing and hydraulic liftgates that protect low-clearance and high-value vehicles.
Step 2: Tracking Live Lane Capacity
Auto transport is a spot market. Prices oscillate weekly with driver availability, seasonal migration corridors (FL ↔ NE snowbird flows in October and April), and fuel index adjustments. Booking a quote that's four weeks stale can leave you 15–22% above current market or, worse, unbookable because no driver will accept.
A reliable broker publishes a capacity index per lane — the ratio of posted loads to available trucks. When that index tips above 4.0, your bid must climb to move up the dispatcher's queue.
Never wonder if you're overpaying for freight.
Track live lane capacity across 48 states.
Step 3: Evaluating Carrier Safety & Authority Ratings
Before a load ever leaves the yard, verify the carrier's FMCSA authority using their USDOT and MC numbers on the SAFER system. Look for three signals: authority status "Active," operating authority "Common" or "Contract," and a BOC-3 process agent on file.
Then pull the carrier's SMS BASIC scores. Unsafe Driving and Vehicle Maintenance percentiles above 65 are yellow flags; anything above 80 should disqualify the carrier from bidding on your load.
Finally, request the carrier's cargo insurance certificate. Federal minimum is $100,000, but any reputable auto hauler carries a $250,000 rider with a named-vehicle endorsement — the only way collector, EV, or exotic vehicles are actually covered end-to-end.
Step 4: Inbound Requirements & Delivery Prep
A 9-car hauler is 75+ feet nose-to-tail and cannot maneuver most residential streets. Expect the driver to request a meeting point — a grocery lot, empty strip mall, or wide arterial where they can stage the ramp safely.
Prep the vehicle to a quarter tank of fuel (weight vs. availability), disable aftermarket alarms, retract or remove roof racks, and complete a walk-around BOL photographing every panel in daylight. That BOL is your only leverage in a damage claim.
